John Jeavons and the Joy of Dirt

“… I made the pilgrimage up from San Francisco to sit at the feet of John Jeavons, who has probably spent as much of his life thinking about building soil as anyone who has ever lived. Jeavons started his career in the 1960s as a systems analyst at Stanford University. When the spirit moved him to pursue agriculture as a vocation, he brought that kind of analytical thinking with him. These are the questions that drove him: How many calories does a person need to survive? What is the smallest plot of land needed to grow those calories for one person for one year? How much land do we need to feed all the people on the planet?

Jeavons has devoted his career to answering these questions and spreading that information around the globe. A small but significant chunk of that learning can be found in his book How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine, first published in 1974, which has sold half a million copies and gone through multiple editions. “

WELL Approaches Five Years

This October, as we sit down to the Willits Harvest Feast, we will be marking the fifth anniversary of WELL. In 2004 Jason Bradford and others started showing the film, The End of Suburbia, which galvanized our community and set us on the path to localization. Peak Oil and human induced Climate Change were the focus of our concerns and the response we promoted was to make our community sustainable and self sustaining to the greatest degree possible.

WELL Update – 8/27/09

1. The next WELL Coordinating Committee meeting has been rescheduled to Mon. Sept. 14th at 5:30pm (instead of Wedn. Sept. 2nd) at the WELL office. Anyone interested in running for the CC is encouraged to attend! (Or call Jane at 456-9067.)

2. The WELL general membership meeting (and election of new CC members) has been rescheduled to 12:30 at the Harvest Festival on Sat. Oct. 3rd rather than at the Oct. 2nd Harvest Dinner.

3. The Sept. 17 film at the Grange will be “Home” – a stunning view of the planet.
