WELL Update to Members, Aug 7, 2010

August 10, 2010

News Flash: WELL received a $10,000 gift from an anonymous deceased donor! This enables us to do some dreaming and brainstorming about how to best further our goals of a sustainable Willits. Come to our upcoming potluck on Aug. 8th to contribute ideas!

Thurs. Aug. 12, 7pm is the Grange’s Annual “Harvest of Ceres” – a play about the summer grain harvest (recently revived in our County). Also will include blessing the grain silos for community security & abundance. A 20 minute public event promptly at 7pm.

Sat. Aug. 14, 9:45am is the 5th Annual WELL Farm Tour, beginning at the Brookside School farm. $5-15 donation requested includes refreshments; lunch will be available at extra cost or BYO. For more info, contact Madge at 459-6675 or moc.enilnostilliwnull@gnortsm.

Sun. Sept. 19, 10-4: WELL-sponsored Community Market and annual Harvest Festival. This will be at the City Fairgrounds, with a theme of “reuse, recycle, and re-invent.” Do you have used or hand-crafted goods to sell, or a useful skill to demonstrate, or would you like to volunteer to help (in advance or the day of the event)? We also need food vendors, musicians, arts-crafts for kids, shade and signage, and other ideas you may have. If you’re interested in having a booth (wares, handcrafts, etc.), being a food vendor, demonstrating a skill, entertaining, and/or volunteering to help, contact Janice at ten.cificapnull@gvecinaj or call her at 459-1204.

Action Alert Re: 101 Bypass – last chance to comment!
It’s not quite a done deal: CTC gave Cal Trans funding approval, but contingent on their obtaining required permits from the Water Board and Corps of Engineers. Those agencies have not yet decided. At issue are unprecedented acres of wetlands being impacted and mitigation proposals that are untested and put 2000 acres of Little Lake Valley under CalTrans’ management. They still plan to build the footprint for a 4-lane freeway but only complete two lanes.
If you already wrote comments, call or email to follow up. If not, please do so now. Ask for responses to all the questions raised about irreversible impacts and uncertain mitigation plans. Request that, in view of the magnitude of these concerns and the massive data not previously available to the public, the Water Board and Corps hold hearings in Willits.
