Correction on July/Aug. WELL Newsletter:
In the article about the Redwood Avenue garden, the brief summary of its history was inaccurate. The garden was established by Jason & Kristen Bradford on City property adjacent to their home, but did not initially have approval from the City. Later, the City approved a formal agreement for the garden, but then in Sept. 2009 withdrew that approval and ordered removal of the garden. In May, the City Council reversed that decision, allowing the continuance of the garden to be maintained by community volunteers.

Willits will be hosting a Transition Town training the weekend of July 30 to Aug. 1. More info to follow or contact Annie, 459-6362.

Our 5th annual WELL Farm Tour has been rescheduled to Aug. 14th , and will begin at 9:45 am at Brookside School Farm. Additional local farms with refreshments along the way, and offering lunch for sale in the afternoon at Golden Rule farm.

Here’s an opportunity to see small-scale farms first-hand and to learn from master-gardeners how good food can be grown right here in Willits. Whether you’re already gardening or would like to, you can learn what grows here, when and how to plant, and some of the challenges farmers face. View farms in progress (they’re always in process), and ask your own garden questions.
A $5 to $20 donation is requested for adults, to cover refreshments and to benefit WELL; kids are free. We especially encourage families and youth to attend. Lunch is an extra cost – or bring your own. We recommend bringing some water, shade hat or parasol for the tour.

Info: Madge 459-6675.

Come to City Council meeting 6pm on Wedn. June 23 at City Hall. Let’s pack the hall!

Talking points for people to include in letters:

The Bypass is too big, destructive, and expensive. Better alternatives can solve local congestion.

The over-sized, unnecessary 4-lane freeway Bypass design will have serious, irreversible adverse impacts on endangered salmon, wetlands and unique habitats in our Little Lake Valley.

Completing only two lanes of the 4-lane Bypass will create an extreme safety hazard, worsened by the very limited access to the raised roadway over 5-1/2 miles long.

Not having a Highway 20 interchange will leave unacceptable congestion and heavy traffic on Main Street, both north and south of the Highway 20 intersection.

Relinquishment to the City of Main St. north of Highwy 20 will create an unacceptable financial burden on the City, particularly in view of continued inter-regional traffic, worsening of conditions at the Sherwood Road intersection, and lack of sidewalks or safety at the High School.

In short, the current Highway 101 Bypass design does more harm than good.

John Jeavons and Ecology Action are featured in the March ODE magazine. Link to article on-line

“… I made the pilgrimage up from San Francisco to sit at the feet of John Jeavons, who has probably spent as much of his life thinking about building soil as anyone who has ever lived. Jeavons started his career in the 1960s as a systems analyst at Stanford University. When the spirit moved him to pursue agriculture as a vocation, he brought that kind of analytical thinking with him. These are the questions that drove him: How many calories does a person need to survive? What is the smallest plot of land needed to grow those calories for one person for one year? How much land do we need to feed all the people on the planet?

Jeavons has devoted his career to answering these questions and spreading that information around the globe. A small but significant chunk of that learning can be found in his book How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine, first published in 1974, which has sold half a million copies and gone through multiple editions. “

Also if you are interested there is a nice interview with John Jeavons in the March/April 1980 edition of Mother Earth News
